PT XL Axiata Tbk (XL) ended 2009 with total revenues growth of 14% to IDR13.9 trillion and EBITDA growth of 21% to Rp. 6.2 trillion compared to 2008.
During the year, XL’s customer base grew 21% to 31.4 mio while the prepaid Revenue Generating Base (RGB) grew 49% to 31.1 mio.
Hasnul Suhaimi, the President Director of XL said, “During 2009, XL experienced significant increase in usage of data services by its subscribers as the customers’ telecommunication need has shifted from simply basic needs i.e. calling and sending SMS to chatting and browsing the social network application through mobile phone. This behavior was supported by higher penetration of BlackBerry and GPRS enabled handsets. In order to cater customers’ need for data service, XL introduced affordable tariffs with various charging system that could be chosen by its customers. As a result, XL’s data services revenue increased by 269%.”
Furthermore, XL also launched several smart tariff packages in the year which could easily be accessed by its customers through *123# that is customized according to subscribers’ needs and habits. This had led to major subscribers’ acquisition.
Outgoing minutes of usage and SMS also increased significantly by 60% to 87.6 billion minutes and by 258% to 63.6 billion SMS.
On top of that, XL also applied smart cost management for all segments which resulted in lower OpEx growth compared to revenue growth. Thus, XL improved its EBITDA margin to 45% resulting in a net income of Rp. 1.7 trillion.
In 2010, XL will have US$ 400 million-450 million cash out capital expenditure. This capex spending will be funded through internally generated Cash Flow.
Hasnul concludes “We will continue to improve quality while managing network load through aligned marketing programs in order to balance network utilization during the day and to avoid unnecessary investment. Available resources will also continuously be monetized in order to maximize our growth and satisfy our customers. ”
